On foot: Topsham Lock Cottage can be reached via the footpaths on either side of the Exeter canal. (There is a foot bridge across the canal just 100m away). It can also be reached from Topsham via the Topsham passenger ferry, which lands at the jetty next to the foot bridge. This crossing only takes 2 minutes. (See map) The ferry cannot operate during low tide and during the winter season it is operating only on weekends.

By bicycle: The Exe estuary cycle path provides an easy route between Topsham Lock Cottage and central Exeter (about 5 miles away). Bicycles can be carried on the passenger ferry from Topsham.

By boat: There are landing platforms in the canal outside the cottage.

By train: The nearest train station is in Topsham on the Avocet Line which runs between Exeter and Exmouth. The station is on the other side of the estuary from Topsham Lock Cottage, but only a six minute walk from the passenger ferry terminal.

By car: There is no vehicular access to Topsham Lock Cottage. The closest car park is the Exeter Canal Car Park, which is an 8-10 min walk away (see map).
